New Technologies
Technology is the way of present and the advancement and emergence of new technology is the way of the future. New technology is going to occur whether we like it or not and whether we want it to happen. These technology offers fear to some people whereas for some people new technology offers opportunity. Some people think that you have to be smart, a genius or a computer expert to use technology and this makes them fearful of learning how to use it properly. Some people are afraid of making mistakes using it or that they will tear it up or it will break. What comes to my mind about new technology is a training session that I had to put together last year. Our school system decided to change grade book software for a different type which also included attendance as well. I set up a training session after school for my department. The new software was not very hard to understand but the teachers felt as if it was just something more for them to have to figure out how to use as well as more work for them. Everyone in the department attended the meeting because it was required of them. There were those that were ok with using the software, some were afraid of using the computer, some were just satisfied with the old software, some came because they had to be there and there were those that were alright with learning how to use it but were going to stick with using the paper grade book.
According to John Keller, there are “four steps to promoting motivation in learning (Learning Theories, 2008).” In using the ARCS Model for learning as a way to get the teachers motivated were the following: attention (by use of active participation to get them more involved and use hands on methods), relevance (explain that by using their new experience they will use skills that they already have), confidence (by providing them with feedback and calm their fears by explaining their likelihood of being successful), and satisfaction (by letting the teachers relate their new learning to a real world setting.

Patrick LaPollo's response.
Great example! Do you believe things could have been different if there were come key change agents involved to instill some motivation and acceptance?
